Who we are

Hector Surco – the Weaver Painter

Hector Surco was born in Cusco, the capital city of the Incas, in 1986. Since he was a child, he has shown his passion for drawing and painting. Like many children growing up in Cusco, his grandmother showed him how to weave and create textile art. It didn’t take too long for Hector to combine his love for drawing and painting with a love for weaving.

Over the years, he’s developed a keen interest in colors and Andean cosmovision expressed in textile art. Having found his true calling, he took the opportunity to go to Lima and work several years with Maximo Laura. Inspired by the color palette of contemporary tapestry art, he found his own language and signature in Andean magic realism.

After winning several awards with his art, he founded Surco Tapestry Art in 2012 and soon started the ´Young Tapestry Artist´ program. Learning never ends. He says:

“My work is a combination of a rich and ancient Andean textile tradition with upholstery innovations from around the world. I always love studying the tools, applications and innovations in textile techniques. On top of that, I multiply the resources of chromatic expression, while maintaining the authentical, iconographic language of Peru.”

A New Generation

Traditionally, the art of weaving is passed on from generation to generation, just like other crafts such as wood crafting, silversmithing, dancing or ceramics. So, whenever someone attains mastery, it´s very much part of the tradition to teach your art and pass it on.

At Surco Tapestry Art Hector started the ´Young Tapestry Artist´ program to pass on the art of tapestry weaving.  Here come the new generation master weavers 😊
